WHEN TO CLIP

The horse's winter coat starts to grow towards the end of August and develops over the next few weeks. This is why most people in the UK clip towards the beginning of October. Depending on how quickly the horse's hair regrows, a second clip could be done in November and a third in late December or early January.

Be aware that the horse's summer coat will, usually, start growing in January, so clipping after this time could interfere with new coat growth. Of course, if the horse is particularly hairy or involved in very strenuous exercise, he may need to be clipped again - it really does depend on the horse.

The science bit

When the horse works, his temperature rises, he then sweats as a mechanism to cool himself down. If he has a thick coat, he gets even hotter during his work, and then the coat stays wet with sweat long after he's been worked. A wet coat, whether caused by sweat or the owner washing the area to remove the sweat, could cause the horse to catch a chill as he'll stay cooler and wet for longer.

If the coat isn't washed, the sweat remains in the coat, and this is far from ideal. Bacteria can multiply and create an unhygienic environment that could result in sores on the skin and be very uncomfortable for the horse. Clipping is a simple and effective way to eliminate this issue.

Small clippers and trimmers are perfect for 'tidying up' your horse's features, such as trimming beards, whiskers, ears and legs. Clipping can help promote hygiene and comfort for animals, by reducing matting and the chance of skin issues.
